Stricter DUI Laws
With the advent of grass roots organizations like MADD (Mothers Against Drunk Driving) and SADD (Students Against Drunk Driving), many states are cracking down on DUI laws-and making them stricter than ever before.
According to the National Highway Safety Traffic Administration, alcohol-related motor vehicle accidents kill someone every 31 minutes. Over the past decade, approximately 1.4 million drivers have been arrested annually on DUI-related charges.
As a result of these findings, many states (encouraged by the federal government) are taking stronger measures to prevent alcohol-related accidents. Some prevention strategies states are taking include:
- - Enacting regular sobriety checkpoints
- - Lowering the legal levels of BAC
- - Maintaining stricter laws like zero tolerance which denies citizens under the age of 21 to have any alcohol in their system when driving
- - Requiring mandatory substance abuse and treatment for DUI offenders
- - Harsher penalties for repeat DUI offenders
